Grieving? Don’t Do It Alone.

These four apps will help you navigate grief in a healthy way.

Grief is a painful thing to experience and not everyone experiences it for the same reasons or in the same way. Put simply, grief is the experience of coping with loss. Most of us think of grief as happening as the result of losing someone we love, but grief can accompany any event that disrupts or challenges our sense of normalcy or ourselves.

After doing some research, I found four apps that can help you navigate the grief process.

1. Grief Works by illume

This app, founded by healthcare professional Julia Samuel, will guide you through grief with tools and direct access to therapists. The app has a short questionnaire to personalize your journey. Plus, if you can’t afford a subscription, it’s not a deal breaker because 10% of subscriptions are reserved for those who need it for free.

2. Untangle Grief

This one is free in the App Store. Untangle Grief's motto is that it holds your hand through all the emotional and logistical challenges that come after a bereavement, making it easier to rebuild your life. The coolest and maybe most useful part of this app is that it connects you with people who share a similar loss experience, with a member directory, one-on-one chats, and weekly events. If you’re not wanting to socialize, or aren’t ready to share your grief with others but need to avoid the tempting dangers of isolation, they have a private chat helpline for when you’re feeling low need help with everything from registering a death to applying for time off work.

3. Apart of Me

This app is for those of you that aren’t all about meditation or therapy. Apart of Me is actually a free mobile game, specifically geared for younger generations and more game-inclined folks, to help you navigate grief and loss through gentle play to find your way back to your healthy, happy, self. Travel through a storm to an enchanted island where you complete quests and a guide to help you learn to guide yourself.

4. Wysa

Grief doesn’t always come after a death. Maybe you’ve been fired from your long-time job or are going through a tough break-up or divorce. Maybe you’ve made a big change in your life and miss how things were before. Maybe you’re just plain stressed or depressed. Wysa is like having an on-call therapist all the time. It even utilizes AI through a great number of exercises and tools, like a mood tracker, a mindfulness guide, and a chatbot.

There is no one good way to grieve, but you don’t have to wing it or push it down anymore just for it to haunt you later. No matter which app you choose, which route you take, you’ll find yourself processing grief in a whole new way, thanks to technology.
